File Preparation
Spelling:
- Do a final spell check to ensure there are no misspelled words. Bay M&A will not modify your files to correct spelling and will not be liable for any mispellings.
Color:
- If your files are submitted using any other color standard, such as RGB or Pantone, they will be converted to CMYK during preflight. Conversion from one color standard to another may cause colors to shift.
Bleed:
- What's a bleed? Bleed is the portion of the product that will be trimmed off when it is cut to the final size.
- Why bleed? The purpose of a bleed is to continue a color, image, or design to the edge of the product. Due to the possibility of shifting in the trimming process, a bleed is required to ensure that a white line does not show on the edges of your product.
- We require ALL files to be built to the full bleed dimension specified for each trim size.
- We automatically trim the bleed off of each side, which will result in the desired trim size.
- Include a 0.25" bleed around the perimeter of your artwork to ensure accurate cutting (e.g., artwork for a 4"x6" postcard should extend to 4.25" x 6.25"). If your image has a white border on all four sides, bleeds are recommended but not required. If your image is not white on all four sides, you must include bleeds in print-ready files.
Images:
- Resolution, also known as DPI (dots per inch), can be described as the number of dots that fit horizontally and vertically into a one-inch space. Generally, the more dots per inch, the more detail captured and the sharper the resulting image. For an image to print properly, the image must be at least 300 dpi at the final output size. If your file is not 300 dpi, you cannot simply increase the dpi from a low resolution to a higher one by increasing the dpi in your imaging program.
Fonts / Typography:
- It is important that you supply all fonts used in your layout. If you do not supply fonts in your artwork file, we will request that you resubmit your files with fonts included.
- If you have vector artwork and your file is missing fonts, you can open your file in Illustrator, select "Create Outlines", save your fonts, re-save your artwork file, and then upload it.
- If you have artwork that is rasterized, you can open your file in Photoshop and select "Flatten image", re-save your artwork file, and then upload it.
Banners:
- At what dimension should I submit my banner file? The dimensions of a banner files should be scaled 12 to 1 so that 1 foot equals 1 inch. For example, if a banner is ordered at 2' x 2' then the file itself should be created at 2" x 2" with a .125" (1/8") bleed on each edge for a final submitted dimension of 2.25" x 2.25".
- At what resolution should I submit my banner file? For optimal print quality banner files should be submitted at 1200 resolution. Banners viewed from a distance may be submitted at lower resolutions and will appear clear. Depending on the distance the banner is being viewed from, we recommend the following resolutions:
- From five feet or less, submit at 1200 dpi
- From five feet or more, submit at 900 dpi
- From 10 feet or more submit at 600 dpi
- From 50 feet or more, submit at 300 dpi
- What file type do you recommend for the best banner printing results? Overall any file submitted vector such as an EPS or PDF exported from Illustrator will produce the highest quality banner print. Please ensure that when submitting vector files you follow all of recommend guidelines for outlining fonts and flattening transparencies found here (link to file print ready checklist "fonts and transparencies").
- Do banner files require the same bleed and text safety guidelines as regular printing files? Yes, banner must be submitted with a .125" (1/8") bleed on every edge to allow any background texture or color to extend fully to the edge of your banner. Text must also be kept 1/8" inside the finished dimension to ensure that no text is trimmed or appears right along the edge of your banner. These specifications are required so as to provide with the highest quality end product.
- Can I pick up my banners at Bay M&A? Banners may be picked up from our office. For shipping to the East Coast you will find that our Next Day and 2nd Day Air shipping prices are quite affordable.
